Telangana flooded: torrential rains submerge over 100 villages, disrupt 99 train services

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding and damage in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Both states have been hit hard by continuous downpours, leading to the swelling of rivers and the submerging of many areas, including major cities like Hyderabad and Vijayawada. The situation is particularly dire in Telangana's Khammam district, where 110 villages are now underwater.

Rescue operations underway

In response to the crisis, the central government has sent nine National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to assist with rescue operations. These teams are already on the ground in Telangana, working to rescue people stranded on hilltops and rooftops. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar reported that 119 people are still stranded in various locations, awaiting rescue. In Mahabubabad district, a woman lost her life after her car was swept away by floodwaters, and her father is still missing.

Widespread disruption

The heavy rainfall has also disrupted rail services, leading to the cancellation of 99 trains and the diversion of 54 others. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red warnings for several districts in Telangana, predicting more heavy rainfall in the coming days. Both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are bracing for continued severe weather, with the IMD forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning for the next five days in parts of the region. The situation remains critical, and authorities are closely monitoring developments as rescue and relief efforts continue.
